Howard Dill - a farmer from distant Canada. He, like many other residents of his country, was carried away by growing pumpkins of considerable size, but unlike the rest, he devoted this hobby not only to his free time, but his whole life, and was able to achieve significant results.
His success cannot be called luck, rather it is the fruit of constant work. For several years he grew an old pumpkin variety common in America - the Real Mammoth. He selected the seeds of the largest pumpkins, planted them, and crossed the best samples with another giant variety - Giant Goderich.
Each season, his vegetables grew by 2-3 tens of pounds of weight until a new variety appeared.
With his vegetables, Howard Dill decided to take part in the competition. The first time he appeared there in 1979, in 1980 his pumpkin reached a significant size of 208 kg, and already in 1981 he broke his own record with a vegetable, 15 kg heavier.
In 1986, Howard received a patent as the man who bred a new pumpkin variety. He called him Atlantic Giant Dilla. Thanks to his efforts, he has long been a world champion in pumpkin growing.
To the question of how he was able to achieve such amazing results, the farmer replied that he worked hard, devoted many years to searching, and of course, he was lucky. He believes that this is the key to success of enthusiastic, even obsessed people.

Tim said this huge vegetable has grown in 105 days. Matheson did not attribute this success only to his efforts. He was sure that his pumpkin had reached such gigantic proportions thanks to the moderate temperatures that were this year.
The 56-year-old farmer was rewarded for his efforts, they gave him 14 thousand dollars for the victory. And, of course, success inspired him, he continues to do this.
In 2015, the man again won the contest in Northern California, but the crop was slightly less - 819 kg. At home, his vegetables are called "flying saucers", because in shape they really resemble UFOs.
2. Beni Meyer pumpkin, 1054 kg
Usually, Americans win victories in such pumpkin contests, but there are exceptions. The pumpkin champion of Switzerland can be called Beni Mayer. Year after year, he went to his goal, intending to create a giant vegetable, and gradually achieved his goal.
In 2009, the weight of his pumpkin was 640 kg, and he became the first Swiss to achieve such a result. His work was rewarded with 500 francs. In 2011, the crop weighed 702 kg, also a kind of record. In 2012, he could boast an unprecedented size of vegetables - 768.5 kg, for which he received a prize of 1,500 francs. And finally, in 2014, Beni Mayer surpassed all records, his pumpkin weighed 1,054 kg. Prior to that, he became famous in Brandenburg with a pumpkin of 951 kg.
Mayer is a farmer. He says that the main secret of his victories is the daily watering of future champions and the thorough, constant care. He could have made history back in 2013, when he brought a pumpkin of considerable size to the contest, but the jury did not accept it for the contest because there was a hole on its surface.
1. Pumpkin Matthias Willemines, 1190 kg
Beni Meyer's record was broken in 2016. The difference was not so big, but these few tens of kilograms made Matthias Willemines the champion.
This time the record holder grew up in Belgian land. The farmer, along with his giant, went to the European Championship, it was held in German Ludwigsburg. Matthias decided to try his luck, although he did not expect that he would become a winner.
The delighted Belgian farmer admitted that he feels great. He himself did not expect his pumpkin to be so heavy, and, of course, he was very glad that he had become the person who had grown the largest vegetable in the whole world.
